Boiler blowdown removes dissolved and suspended solids from the boiler water to prevent foaming, carryover and scale. Too little blowdown puts the boiler at risk, while too much sends hot, treated water and fuel to drain. We help you set the right blowdown rate for your water quality and calculate how much of the heat can be recovered.
We ask for boiler data, the blowdown arrangement, boiler and feedwater analysis, make-up water and condensate return flows and fuel use.
We calculate the blowdown rate your water quality actually needs and compare it with how the boiler is run today.
We estimate the heat in the blowdown stream and the options for using it, such as flash steam to the deaerator or a heat exchanger on make-up water.
You receive the recommended blowdown setting, control options and recovery measures, with the calculations behind each one.
GCC CONTEXT
Boiler water in the region is often made from desalinated water that has been treated, so every tonne sent to drain carries the cost of desalination, treatment and the fuel used to heat it. The right blowdown rate, combined with heat recovery where it pays, reduces all three without putting the boiler at risk.
Boiler blowdown is water deliberately removed from a boiler to keep the concentration of dissolved and suspended solids within limits. Without it, solids build up and cause foaming, carryover and scale.
Continuous blowdown removes water from just below the water surface, where dissolved solids are most concentrated, at a steady rate. Bottom blowdown removes sludge from the lowest point of the boiler in short, intermittent bursts.
It is calculated from the dissolved solids in the feedwater and the maximum allowed in the boiler water. Better condensate return and make-up water quality usually allow a lower rate.
It depends on the blowdown rate, boiler pressure, operating hours and whether there is a use for the heat. We calculate the savings for your conditions before any investment is considered.
